Sixteen Candles is the ultimate chick flick for a night on the couch. Starring Molly Ringwald (famous for other cool classics, The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink), this 1984 film is a coming of age tale centered around the main Character, Sam's 16th birthday. It has all the markers of a teen movie - high school crushes, jocks, geeks, angst, and family drama.
Sixteen Candles was generally well received by the public and Molly Ringwald's performance was praised by most critics. She just nails the 'insecure high school girl with a crush' image. There are some elements that would make the film unacceptable by today's standards. For example, an Asian character which makes use of offensive stereotypes, as well as a joke about date rape. All in all, this fun movie ages pretty well, though.
