In the movie, Burt Reynolds has to illegally smuggle beer across state lines (at the time, it was illegal to do so). During his travels, he picks up Sally Field after she had just run out on her wedding. To make matters worse, she was supposed to marry a sheriff's son. The sheriff is played delightfully by Jackie Gleason who appears drunk throughout the entire filming.
