It should be noted that Batwoman and Batgirl are not the same character; they're different interpretations of the same basic role. Batwoman is a groundbreaking character; her human alter-ego is Kate Kane, and she was kicked out of the military on the grounds of being gay. As she had the mindset to protect and serve, she became a vigilante in Gotham, apparently thinking that vacancy wasn't already filled.
