Although Ethiopia is not known for its Christian tradition, the country is home to several monolithic rock-cut churches. The most famous such churches are in the town of Lalibela, found in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia. Today, Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities and a central site for pilgrims from around the whole world.
The population of the city of Lalibela is almost entirely Christian, which is in strike comparison to the rest of the country. Another interesting fact about Lalibela is that the layout and names of the major buildings and streets in the city have been widely accepted by the local clergy to be a symbolic representation of the city of Jerusalem in Israel. Lalibela is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which encourages international peace.
