Pompeii was an ancient village found in Rome. It was well-known during historic times until it was "buried" by Vesuvius (a Vulcan) in 79 AD. Pompeii is close to modern Naples, in the Campania region of Italy (just south of Rome). After the volcanic explosion, the city was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft.) of volcanic ash and pumice. The city was eventually conquered by Rome in the 4th century BC, just a few hundred years after its inception.
