The lifespan of a celebrity can be quite unusual. Celebrities stay in the spotlight for 15 minutes of fame, or they last the long haul, having careers that span decades. It is admirable to see someone work on their craft successfully for such a long period of time, but some celebrities never stick to one passion.
It is fairly common to see someone who excelled in the entertainment industry try out new things. Jesse “The Body” Ventura was a professional wrestler before he was a governor. Look at the example of Arnold Schwarzenegger as well. Two stars in their fields who turned to politics.
For people with big egos and a lot of time on their hands, going into politics can seem like the obvious answer. The biggest ego in all of entertainment might be Kanye West, and you better believe that he just announced he’d be running for president, but will he actually do it?
The United States Presidential Election is only four months away, but that doesn’t seem to sway rapper, producer, and fashion designer Kanye West from wanting to throw his hat in the race. The former Maga hat wearing star tweeted that he planned to run for president last Saturday on July 4th. Is this another stunt from the provocateur? Or does he actually have plans to run?
His tweet read, “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION,.” His wife and media mogul Kim Kardashian boosted the tweet with an accompanying American flag, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave his open endorsement as well. Despite these endorsements, can a candidate really win only four m months outside of an election?
The tweet stirred up a lot of discussion on Twitter, both good and bad, but it doesn’t appear that Kanye West has any true intention of running. That’s because there is no official FEC filing under his name. Since Biden already has the Democratic nomination, and Trump is most likely the Republican pick, West would need to run as an independent. That wouldn’t be a huge problem except for the fact that six states have already closed their filing for independents.
West would need to work quickly to apply to run in all the remaining states before it’s too late. Unless he had been planning this move for a while, it likely won’t come to fruition. That doesn’t mean he stands no chance. Voters still have the option to write a candidate in. If he could get enough people to do that, it would be a miracle.
What is the purpose of West’s announcement? One possible theory is that it has something to do with a new album and his deal with GAP. West has a way of stirring up controversy whenever he has something new coming out. His announcement on new music and a new clothing line deal came just days before his presidential announcement.
It isn’t as if Kanye West has never been political. His outspokenness came to a head during a Hurricane Katrina television event when he said, “George W. Bush doesn’t care about black people.” Some have argued that he has failed the black community by wearing a Trump hat in 2018. While theories abound regarding whether it will actually happen, and why he’s doing it, but only time will tell the truth. If anything, Kanye West has us once again talking about him.
