Your oral hygiene doesn't just take a toll on your teeth, it also has repercussions over the rest of your body too. While it is important to adopt best practices when it comes to dental hygiene, there are some tips which can give you the edge when it comes to your teeth. When plaque hardens into a thick coat and stays on the gum line, it is called tartar - it is important therefore to get rid of them. The following tricks might help you get through it.
Brushing your teeth properly
This goes without saying, you need to properly brush your teeth. We have attached a picture which will outline exactly how you need to brush the. Careful not to go overboard though because it can result in abrasion.
Twice a day
The golden rule of thumb which doctors reiterate day in and day out is brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Use a good quality tooth paste and leave it on your teeth for two minutes. Rinse off with water.
Oil pulling
Using oil pulling for tartar is perhaps the best way to remove tartar naturally. Take coconut or sesame oil and just swish it around the mouth. Swish it for at least 15 minutes before spitting it out. Do not swallow the oil.
Floss daily
Flossing definitely helps to prevent the growth of plague by removing food particles that settle between the crevices of our teeth. Brushes don't necessarily reach those crevices and those eventually cause buildup of bacteria. You can floss right after your meals.
Drink more fluids
It is important to drink at least 5 to 6 glasses of water every day. Water has the ability to wash out the bacteria to prevent the growth of plaque. You can also use certain fruit juices such as orange and cranberry.
Eating raw vegetables
It is important to eat raw vegetables. Certain variants of celery and carrots can prevent plaque to help remove tartar without ever having to visit the dentist. You can also consume a bunch of figs, apples and guava slices.
Salt water rinses
Warm water which is mixed with salt can also help you to get rid of tartar from your teeth fast. Just add half a teaspoon of salt to a warm cup of water and rinse your mouth every hour for the first few days.
Clean the tongue
It is equally important to use a tongue scraper and clean the thin, subtle layer of tartar and plaque on your tongue. Because if you don't, it will rub off on the teeth and the cycle will start all over again.
Toothpaste with peroxide
Toothpaste which contain at least one of the two, peroxide or fluoride both of which are a great means of whitening the teeth. By using one of these regularly, you can control plaque and buildup behind teeth.
Herbs and spices
Most herbs like parsley, rosemary, cloves, spearmint and coriander are very healthy for your gums. Regularly flossing and chewing on these herbs after meals will eliminate plaque formation and result in healthier teeth. What's key is to keep at it.
Sugar free gum
By constantly chewing gum, your mouth stimulates saliva which naturally washes off plaque and tartar from the teeth. You can use this remedy when you're outdoors and don't really have access to a tooth brush and tooth paste.
Quit smoking
Smoking reduces the ability of your mouth to produce saliva. Overtime this results in the buildup of plaque and tartar which will experience a surge of growth due to a lack of saliva. So it is advisable to quit smoking.
Sesame seeds
Sesame seeds are naturally going to scrub off the plaque from your teeth. Chewing regularly on them is definitely going to work marvels. Use your finger to spread the seed over your teeth and spit them out.
Bloodroot extract
Bloodroot is a perennial herb which is available in liquid extract. Mix just a few drops of bloodroot using warm water and then use the mixture to rinse with your mouth. The herb's powerful effect has been backed up by numerous studies.
Carbonated beverages
This might sound like the biggest oxymoron but carbonated beverages can easily get rid of plaque and hardened tartar. Swish a few teaspoons of the soda violently around your mouth for a few minutes and then spit it out. It is important to follow this up by brushing your teeth.
